I am Master of Science Civil/Water Engineer with 11 years of consulting and design experience in the water sector in Finland (5yr) and Australia (6yr). I have specialised in catchment hydrology, flood analysis and design of sustainable stormwater management systems. I am an advocate for integrated water cycle management that values all types of urban water streams as a resource, including rainwater, stormwater and wastewater effluent. The holistic approach provides tools for improving surface water and groundwater quality in cities and tackling urban water scarcity by supplementing pristine freshwater resources with alternative water sources. I work towards achieving these goals by using Green Infrastructure that incorporates a network of environmental features that not only manage, recycle and store water but also provide healthy and biodiverse green spaces for urban communities and improve the resilience of cities.

For a decade I've worked with the sensemaking, communication and mobilization effort related to sustainability, transition and reaching the SDGs.
The big question amidst budding solutions and a growing engagement on climate&Co is: how do we create actual mobilization, not just agreement, for the change that is needed?
If people are not able to imagine what the sustainable future will be like, they are not able to go there. In order to imagine, we need stories to fuel our imaginations and perceptions. These stories are missing.
Telling the solutions, then, becomes more than telling their impact in CO2 reductions and created environmental benefits. We need stories about lived life in a future where all the exciting solutions - environmental, societal, technological, cultural - we are creating now have come to flourish and supplement eachother. With these stories we can help people answer some very basic questions which have hitherto been ignored: What will life be like? How will I feel? How will I experience everyday life? Who will I be in this strange new reality?
We need to couple the calls for change, new habits and new values with stories of what we will be like, once we've gone through the change.

My expertise is on data analytics and social enterprises, using data to measure impact and evaluate an organization's performance not just on financial performance but also on environmental and social performance. This results in more transparency so that an organization is not just accountable for financial results to it's shareholders, but also to other stakeholders such as the community, employees and the environment.

The last 11 years I have dedicated my life on studying Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (BSc, MSc and PhD level) with the main focus on sustainability. I worked with microreactors, spinning disc reactors, visible light photocatalysis, innovative solvents, crude lignin oil and with lignin oligomers, all new, innovative and sustainable projects on an academic level.

During my PhD we were the first ones to present hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents, an innovative solvent that can be prepared by water-immiscible solid components by simply mixing these components at room temperature. The best example of these solvents is our paper that is published in the beginning of 2019: https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acssuschemeng.8b03520

Currently I work 0.8 fte as a postdoc at Eindhoven University of Technology and 0.2 fte as Chief Business Officer (CBO) of the startup Vertoro (https://www.vertoro.com/). In the combination of these jobs I investigate the production of crude lignin oil (CLO) from (waste-)wood. CLO, analogous to the fossil variety, is the basis for countless downstream applications like chemicals, materials and fuels. From this CLO we can also make Vertoro's "Goldilocks", meltable and solvent soluble lignin oligomers. Not too large and not too small, just solvent soluble and thermoplastic lignin oligomers that we expect that can be used for several applications using the positive points of this natural polymer.

I chose for the combination of a postdoc position and a startup since I think it is highly important to commercialize innovative concepts to sustainabilize the world as soon as possible by reducing the CO2 footprint.

Thus, to conclude I bring years of experience in working on making chemistry and chemical engineering more sustainable on an academic and industrial level.

I've been leading at Unilever one of the main sustainable sourcing partnership with Save The Children and Symrise to improve livelihoods of our farmer communities in Madagascar. This year we brought our stories to life in our first consumer-facing campaign – Vanilla for Change, listed as finalist for two awards at this year’s Ethical Corporation Business Awards. Collaborating with a new NGO partner WE.org, we could empower our consumers to make a difference with their everyday purchase, track the impact of their choices and reading about the stories of the people we are helping. The extended partnership allows us to also expand on the education pillar of the partnership, as through the WE SCHOOLS program, we will be able to reach over 100,000 students in UK to educate them on sustainability and give them the tools they need to develop projects to protect the environment and our society. This work led my company to nominate me for a place in the Forbes' 30 under 30 "movers and shakers" list.

I'm now after 4 years at Unilever moving onto a new journey at Rainforest Alliance to lead consumers engagement and sustainability advocacy.

IMPACTR Expert Community Liaison

PHD Biologist, International Health & Sustainable Development

Why we're building an Expert Community

The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been brought to the forefront of financial, social and entrepreneurial trends - and the sustainability revolution is accelerating at pace. We’re calling on scientists and experts within sustainability or areas related to the SDGs, or in any of the niche subjects affecting our planetary ecosystem, our societies and our well-being, to form a community that guides us on how to engage going forward.

For people to make the right choices, the world needs a community of experts to drive adoption of the most sustainable solutions.  IMPACTR will be engineered to drive positioning of sustainable solutions at the "top of the charts", based on the peer reviews of the expert community and our expert-voting system.  Hence we need to build up a solid expert community that will be the content drivers and become the first primary users of the platform.

Please help us reach this goal by signing up!
